Anaya
Anaya is 15-years-old. She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer) at age 10. She had an initial round of chemotherapy and surgery at the time of diagnosis. Unfortunately the cancer has come back and she has been offered more treatment.
She lives part time with each of her parents who are divorced and share custody. Her mother re-married and Anaya has a younger half brother. Her parents will share decision-making as her automatic SDMs.
Advance Care planning for Anaya involves helping her and her parents understand her illness and explore her values and feelings.
Her parents made most of her healthcare decisions for the first round of treatment but now Anaya is learning more about her own illness. She may have capacity to make some or all of her healthcare decisions. Even when she is not capable, she should be encouraged to participate in any way she can.
